An Easy Peasy Retro Skirt

Ta da! Skirt with complete outfit.
Ta da! Skirt with complete outfit. Please ignore the manic grin and double chin!!

So one of the things I really enjoy doing is sewing.  Actually, more than sewing itself, I enjoy looking at vintage patterns and seeing what other people have created. One of my favourite blogs to read is Sew Retro. Here, the readers and users can post up their vintage creations and I absolutely love looking at them all!  Through this site, I’ve been reading lots of other blogs and that’s how I stumbled across the instructions for the skirt here at Gertie’s Blog for Better Sewing.

The lovely skirt... with its giant waistband!
The lovely skirt... with its giant waistband!

I spent a very happy Sunday afternoon creating the skirt. It did give me some jip, I’ll admit! The zip was almost impossible for me to get right. I am a bit of an amateur still and this was something like my fifth ever zip. Thankfully, it went on and is still attached.  I’m pleased with how the gathers look around the waistband, but that waistband is a bit of a sight unfortunately. I don’t think I’ll ever wear it without a belt over the top. It’s slightly too big and gapes most unbecomingly at the top. However, I do think it looks good in this outfit. I like it so much that I’m wearing it again today!

Other items of interest from the picture: my necklace came from a charity shop in Blackpool. There are also some matching earrings but they’re just a bit too much altogether.  The belt is a vintage Jaeger one that I got from a car boot sale for 50p. Top is Gap sale from two years ago. I think if I’d actually sorted my hair, put a bit of red lippy on and not grinned like a fool then this might have been a half decent picture!  Oh, and the mirror is a G plan one from the 70s found at a jumble sale or charity shop (I can’t remember which; we’ve got two of them).

Let me know if you attempt the skirt and don’t forget to say thanks to Gertie!
